Just south of the Topsail Coast is Wilmington, whose legacy dates back to the 1700s. A downtown historical home tour is popular, or you can visit the Old City Market, Cotton Exchange, Railway Museum or Chandler's Wharf.
The first weekend in April, Wilmington is host to the Azalea Festival, actually the festivities commence on Wednesday, prior to the first weekend, with the arrival of the year's celebrity Azalea Queen.
Also worth a trip is the recently renovated Cape Fear Museum on Market Street. For hours and activities call 910-341-7413. Across the river is the USS. North Carolina Battleship Memorial, with the World War II era "Showboat" preserved as it was during its heyday a half a century ago.
South of Wilmington, visit Ft. Fisher, a Civil War battlefield and fort (U.S. Highway 421). Take the Ft. Fisher Ferry to Southport, and visit the ruins of historic Brunswick Town on NC Highway 133, the area's first major town and Royal Governor's residence. Nearby is Orton Plantation, a well preserved site whose gardens are worth the trip alone, flowers bloom all year-round.
For more information on the Wilmington area, visit the Cape Fear Coast Convention & Visitors Bureau in the old Courthouse at 24 N. 3rd St., or call 910-341-4030.
