Historic Homes

Bellaire Plantation & Restoration

    The last, and largest, 18th century brick plantation house in NC, the pre-Revolutionary Georgian style Mansion has much original family furniture including huge cooking fireworks with crane. This long-term restoration project was begun in 1987. It is open for 1-hour guided tours until 5pm Saturday and Sunday. Call for group reservations.

Attmore-Oliver House

    Historic (1790) home and compound which also includes Craven County’s oldest surviving brick building, an 1884 smokehouse and New Bern Historical Society Headquarters. Open for tour Tuesday through Saturday, 1pm to 4:30pm, from April through mid-December.

The Fireman’s Museum

    The New Bern fire company, one of the country’s oldest operating under its original charter, has a fascinating history exhibited in photographs, original firefighting equipment and Fred, the horse who died pulling a firefighting wagon. Firefighting oral histories are told by Ben Gaskill.

    Narrated trolley car tours (90 min.) begin and end at the Commission House at Tryon Palace Thursday through Saturday and Monday, 11am and 2pm; Sunday, 2pm. Tickets at Cherishables Gift Shop, 712 Pollock St., on the trolley or at Sheraton Grand New Bern.

    The Craven Arts Council and Gallery exhibits works of regional, NC and national artists at the remodeled 1912 bank building that also serves as its offices and central ticketing outlet for all area arts events and performances. Gallery hours are 10am to 5pm, Monday through Saturday.

    Open Monday through Friday, 8:30 am to 5 pm; Saturday, 9 am to 5 pm; Sunday, 10 am to 4 pm. The visitors bureau can supply you with a walking tour map of the historic district with descriptions of more than 100 historic locations and can answer most questions about town.

    Chamber offices are housed in the same building as the visitors bureau. Helpful information is available for those visitors who are considering relocating to New Bern during weekdays, 8am to 5pm.
