Tryon Palace, built in 1770 for British Colonial governor
William Tryon in New
Bern, served as both colonial and state capitol and was known as the most
beautiful building in America. As the colonies and state refocused their
capitals, the Georgian-style mansion fell into grave disrepair until its
complete reconstruction in the 1950s. At that time, only the palace stables
remained standing.
Today, the Tryon Palace Historic Sites and Gardens include the accurately reconstructed main palace, the John Wright Stanley House (circa.1783) on George Street and the Dixon-Stevenson House (circa.1828) on Pollock Street. New Bern Academy (circa.1809) at New and Hancock streets is part of the historic complex, and Robert Hay House (circe.1810) on Eden Street is currently being restored with accuracy to reflect the lifestyle technology of its time. The Commission House on Pollock Street serves as administration building for the complex.
New
Bern’s festive and historic annual events also involve Tryon Palace
occurrences as well. New Bern’s Spring Historic Homes and Gardens Tour is
concurrent with the palace’s Gardeners’ Weekend for the enjoyment of palace
gardens during the spring season’s peak bloom.
Mumfest in October also opens
the palace gardens free to the public to enjoy the colorful chrysanthemums and
historic reenactment on the palace grounds. Tryon Palace conducts an annual
Decorative Arts Symposium with East Carolina University’s Continuing Education
Division in March. The celebration of King George III’s Birthday: Festival of
Colonial Life occurs in June bringing history to life in demonstrations and
reenactments. In December, Tryon Palace’s Christmas Celebration involves
holiday decorating workshops, daytime and candlelight tours of the palace
dressed appropriately for the holidays.
From Memorial Day through Labor Day, palace tours are conducted from 9 am to 7 pm Monday through Saturday., 1 pm to 7 pm on Sundays, (last tour begins at 5 pm). Other times of the year, the palace is open 9 am to 5 pm Monday through Saturday., and 1 pm to 5 pm on Sundays. (last tour begins at 4 pm). Shops are open until 5:30 pm., with French, Japanese, Spanish, German and English language interpretations are available. Sign language interpretations are also available if arrangements are made in advance. The palace is closed Thanksgiving Day, Dec. 24 to 26, and Jan. 1.
